But, the speakers I have attached to my network set up right now, for use with all the computers in my house (wirelessly) are about to give out. I've got a set of small iPod speakers set up to the wireless extension in the other room too, but the sound quality of those is pretty bad.<br /><br />For now, I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to go with speakers for the iPod, or with a set-up more like what I've got now. Sigh... it just seems like there's too many choices to make a good decision.<br /><br />Or, maybe I'm just not really ready to decide yet. I've done this in the past with other digital cameras (including both Canon and Sony models), and have always gotten very poor results, in terms of battery life.<br /><br />I've been pleasantly surprised with the results with my Powershot A2000 so far. I've had these batteries in for about 2 months now, and am still using them. Though the low battery warning has come on several times, they've not yet given out on me. I've been making moderate use of the camera (say, 30-40 photos per week on average) during this period, and haven't had to replace the batteries yet.<br /><br />I'll pick up my other rechargeable batteries when I get back to Singapore, but so far, I have been quite pleased with the fairly good battery life on this little camera. Somehow, instead of leaving one in each of my homes, I've got both of them in Singapore!<br /><br />Anyway, I managed to go get a new cable at the big electronics supply shop in Metro City, where there are numerous stalls in one big showroom selling all sorts of cables and accessories. I found what I wanted, after a lot of description (I don't know what it is called in Chinese), but it cost me a small fortune. The exact same cable that goes for US$7 on Amazon cost me about US$20 here. I didn't want to just dive into buying one because I live overseas, and the Kindle was not set up for overseas use early on. There was some feeling of that for me, early on, but the Kindle has changed my mind. I still wouldn't want to do a lot of reading on a computer screen (I do enough of that, and really hate it), but I can read on my Kindle for a long stretch of time without feeling tired. It's just like reading a book, really.<br /><br />I don't think this means the end of traditional paper books, not yet. But one day I could see that happening as technology keeps advancing. I suppose this one could be the same, but so far, I have been able to avoid most of the "junk posts" by just looking through the topics that interest me.<br /><br />The site might not be for everyone, but it is kind of fun to have a spot to post articles, and the site is really easy to use. It has helped me gain a little exposure for some projects I've been working on, which is the main reason I signed up in the first place. I haven't found it to be the big money-maker some hubbers say it can be, but I've also not really tried to make money at it. I suppose I can see how it works, for those who are going that route. I use my printer a LOT, probably wasting more paper and other resources than I should (though I do recycle). What to do... I am a writer, and work better when I can see the written word on the page.<br /><br />I've been using the Fuji Xerox FX DocuPrint 203A Laser Printer as my main printer for several years now. I don't have an office outside of the home, so this is where I print anything I need to have on paper, including documents for work. It gets pretty heavy traffic. And so far, it's been great. <br /><br />I got it cheap, and was kind of concerned it wouldn't last. But it's turned out to be a great purchase, even better than the Brother model I used for some time and loved. The toner is affordable, and lasts a really long time. I only have to replace it about twice a year, despite the high volume of printing I do.<br /><br />I didn't actually intend to get a Fuji Xerox when I bought the printer, thinking I would probably go with a Brother again, since I was so happy with the previous one. But the price was right, and it was in stock when I needed it, prompting me to go with this model. And I haven't regretted it one bit. I did the shopping online here in Singapore, and just clicked "deliver to my Kindle." When the Kindle arrived here, it had all 200+ of my books already in it. (Most of the books were free, though I did pay for a few.)<br /><br />When downloading books through the Whispernet network overseas, there is a charge of $1.99. I was a little sad to see that at first, as the free delivery in the US is one of the Kindle's most appealing perks. But, when I think about it, I've ordered plenty of products from Amazon for which the shipping to my overseas location was almost as expensive as the product itself. A small charge is, I guess, not so bad a thing. But I do hope the price drops a little bit over time, as the network's service improves.<br /><br />The Kindle Reader is a great toy for any avid reader, especially one who travels a lot and is not afraid of a little bit of technology. I have to confess myself a convert to the new technology. I am almost sure I will get one the next time I am in the States, having it shipped there so that I can download things easily before making my return to Asia. After having used my friend's for a few days, I am pretty sure I can make it work out for me the way I want, even though I am not going to be within range of the network most of the time. (I still can't believe it isn't available ANYWHERE outside of the US yet. That has to change soon, I would imagine.)<br /><br />The Kindle is a great toy for any avid reader. And for a reader who travels much, it is like a miracle-toy. I am very much looking forward to getting mine on my next trip home. It started acting up almost as soon as I got home, and I finally broke down and took it to the Apple shop. We tried reinstalling software, zeroing all data, and all sorts of tricks to make sure it wasn't a virus... only to figure out (at last) that it was the motherboard. And maybe a few other small hardware related problems. At the end of the day, repairs were going to cost a fair bit, and there was a promotion on the MacBook... so, I'm now using a new laptop.<br /><br />I haven't given up on the old one, though. I'm going to do the repairs on it myself, saving a ton of money. I'll give it to my friend when it is fixed up, and let her enjoy a pretty big upgrade from what she is using. Should be fun for all. Obviously they are just the thing for everybody who's anybody. Well, I guess I'm a nobody, right?<br /><br />Wrong.<br />My sister got me a pair of noise-reduction headphones for Christmas, and now I know why everybody in Business Class loves them. In Business Class, you are likely sitting with people who travel a lot, and so know how to make those long trips in as much comfort as possible. Noise-reduction headphones make a difference. They are very effective for blocking out sound, making it possible to sleep on those long flights.<br /><br />I am so glad my sister got me a pair of noise-reduction headphones. I use lots of different methods of keeping in touch when I am away, but I think my favourite will always be using international calling cards. I've bought some to use when I was in the US travelling and wanting to call back to Asia, and found that the rates are WAY better than any long distance service there. But I've really fallen in love with calling cards more recently. And all because of my oldest godson. He is an avid telephone user, and has been since he was 2 or 3 years old. He memorized my cell phone number sometime around then, and started giving me short calls throughout the day, just to chat. When I am overseas, his mother doesn't allow him to call my cell phone, though. So... I've started giving him an international calling card when I am going to be away for an extended period, and then he can call me whenever he wants. I have been looking around for some in-ear headphones for a while (since the <a href="http://hifidel-techreview.blogspot.com/2007/05/cheap-earbuds.html">cheap ones</a> I bought some time back gave way), and recently decided I preferred the earhook type for when I run or cycle. I managed to get these for about S$30 less than what they usually go for, by <a href="http://www.peregrineonline.com/2008/07/is-it-still-possible-to-get-cheap.html">shopping at Lucky Plaza</a>. <br /><br />I am really happy with the sound of the headphones. The bass is fantastic, and the in-ear design works very well to cut down the interference of outside noise. I love the quality of the sound, and the comfort of the headphones just makes it all that much better. I had recently tried to replace my cheap earbuds with a different sort of headphones, but they just never quite feel comfortable in my ears.<br /><br />Tomorrow morning I will run with them, and then I will have my final opinion on the product. They feel very secure so far, and I think that running shouldn't change that. It's a good fit for me, and I love having it. It works out nice having that for most of my iPod usage, and then having a Shuffle for running and cycling. I like it that way.<br /><br />I like it so much, in fact, that I bought a pair of Shuffles today. I was offered a great price on the new 2 gig model, and so bought 2 to give as gifts. I have some friends who are really big runners, and I thought they'd enjoy having a Shuffle for their running time as much as I do. While the Shuffle has its disadvantages if it is the only iPod you own (no screen, not great for audio books), I do think it is perfect for running and cycling. I have bought a new 80 gig iPod instead. <br />As much as I've talked about the iPhone, and as much as I think it is really cool, I've decided against it for me. After thinking about it, I think it would just be too heavy of use on one device if it is all combined into one thing. Watching Steve Jobs walk out on the stage with that manila envelope, and then take a <i>laptop</i> out of it was pretty amazing. Having done a lot of travels with a laptop, there is something about that that is just so appealing.<br /><br />But I've been a little bothered, looking at the <a href="http://www.apple.com/macbookair/specs.html">specs</a> by what is missing. First of all, the absence of an optical drive bothers me. I know you can get an external optical drive, but that just isn't the same, is it? The absence of speakers on the new machine bothers some potential buyers too, and you can count me among those.<br /><br />I am more disturbed by the missing Fire Wire port. I use Fire Wire for my video camera, external hard drive, and iPod. It is just so much faster and more stable than USB, and I would miss having a Fire Wire port on my laptop. <br /><br />I know that Apple seems to be pointing toward Bluetooth and WiFi to answer the needs for external speakers, printers, and other peripherals. That all doesn't bother me for the most part, especially since my system is set up that way anyway. But there are times when having the ports to attach some peripheral or another comes in very handy. Somehow, I think I would miss all of this if I were to move to a MacBook Air. Seems to me that it is a laptop that screams for a docking station if it is to be used effectively at home or in the office.<br /><br />What about you? I had seen pictures from friends' phones, and was decidedly unimpressed. I remembered the early digital cameras, and how grainy and ugly those photos were. I took the same route with camera phones that I did with the early digital cameras — wait. I decided that it was silly to dump a bunch of money into a camera that was going to produce poor quality. And it paid off. My first digital camera produced satisfactory pictures at a cheap price (a friend is still using that camera today), and the second digital camera I bought is the one I am still using today, and am very satisfied with. It was not expensive.<br /><br />The same is now true of phone cameras. Samsung's <a href="http://www.samsung-g600.co.uk/features.html">5 Megapixel camera phone</a> produces high quality photos, and comes with a price tag way lower than those earliest camera phones did. To me, giving a few years for products like this to really boom makes sense. One of the things I've found hard to get in other countries is baseball news. Being that most of the world isn't baseball country, that isn't surprising.<br /><br />For the most part, I keep up with my <a href="http://houston.astros.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/hou/homepage/hou_homepage.jsp">favorite team</a> by MLB.com, along with a couple of bulletin boards. At MLB.com, one of the best things is that you can "watch" the game live via the graphics on Gameday. It isn't really the same as seeing or hearing a game, but at least you can follow the progress.<br /><br />If you find yourself on the road, wanting to keep up with your favorite team, this is one of the best ways to do it. It's easy, and it's free. Tonight I sat down and messed with my photos for the first time at any length since I got my new computer. That also means it's the first time I've really played with the newest version of iPhoto.<br /><br />And... wow! This is a big step forward. The biggest change I noticed was how smoothly it is integrated with my camera -- both my digital camera and the camera on my phone. I am impressed with how much smoother it is.<br /><br />I especially liked that I can now import video clips via iPhoto. I thought that was a big drawback in the earlier versions.<br /><br />This will make it much easier when I integrate my video clips and photos into a single video -- especially those short takes for YouTube. I am pleased with the newest version of iPhoto. It is called Comic Life, and mine is version 1.2.4.<br /><br />What I like is that it arranged photos and images into various unique forms, allowing you to add special effects and text boxes or bubbles. It is pretty cute, and can make for really nice photo collages and posters.<br /><br />I haven't signed up yet for the full version (I just came across it this morning), but have already found how useful it can be for making posters and things like that. With the full version, I can use those images on my website -- simple and easy web design that looks very sophisticated. When the Z300 wouldn't roam the way I need it to, I tried an LG C3380. I should've known better than to leave Sony Ericsson.<br /><br />It is not that LG phones aren't good. Quite the contrary. My C3380 sports a nice camera that takes reasonably good quality pictures for a cell phone. But cameras on a phone aren't top priority for me, so that does little to win me over.<br /><br />I guess my biggest complaint is the SMS feature. I have found on the LG, and on every brand other than my SE, that it takes too many steps to send an SMS. If I have already said I want it to send, why should I have to reconfirm the number, and then say "Yes" one more time too? That is just too long-winded, if you ask me. <br /><br />Perhaps my Sony Ericsson has just pampered me, but for a feature that I use as frequently as I do text messaging, I have to have a good, quick service. I don't just mean that you can use your laptop to get online for free (though there is that), but that they even have computers that travelers can use to get online <i>for free</i> in the terminal.<br /><br />I've done a fair bit of traveling around the world. In most airports, you have to pay a fair price for online access at all, and most require that you use your own computer to get online. But even for those that offer computer terminals, very few are free. In fact, Changi is the only one that comes to mind.<br /><br />This is really nice when you get caught in an <a href="http://showintale-thejourneys.blogspot.com/2007/07/free-internet-access-at-airport.html">unexpected flight delay</a>. I can attest to that. <br /><br />There is a 15 minute time limit, but that isn't much of a problem. Come to think of it, living in a tech-overrun city like I do, it would be moderately easy to hide behind a sort of upgrade fever (which is more or less the norm in my world anyway) if one were a spy playing... er, working... with all the cool toys.<br /><br /><a href="http://tinyurl.com/yqo33h">USA Network's Burn Notice</a> is going to be all about people who work with the coolest spy toys ever. It starts on June 28, and it is going to be filled with precisely this sort of adventure. We used to call him MacGyver. (Yes, I know, I've just revealed what a dinosaur I am, saying that.)<br /><br />It looks to me like Burn Notice will be a much more modern, cool version of what those old shows were. With some cool-headed, innovative way of getting out of any jam that comes along, I am looking forward to a review of my physics class -- it has been a long time, after all.<br /><br />That is part of what is so cool about geeky technology stuff. (Ironic, huh?) I mean, yeah, it isn't exactly like the cheerleaders are going to start snubbing the quarterback in favor of the guy always stuck in the chemistry lab. But, when it comes down to it, doesn't all the geeky technology stuff work better on all these cool TV shows than the ability to throw a football does? (Well of course, usually, the geeky guys on TV are pretty adept with that sort of stuff too, when needed. I don't normally like to buy my earphones at such places, but the earpieces that came with my new iPod Shuffle were really hurting my ears. I apparently have small earholes because standard sized earphones always hurt. And in the cold weather at the time, it was just magnified.<br /><br />Fast forward several months to today. I am still very much enjoying those earbuds, and the cheapskate price I paid seems crazy now. I expected them to fall apart by now, but they are still going strong. I have no idea what brand they are -- probably some knock-off item like you often find at such roadside stalls. But whatever. I love how it integrates with my <a href="http://hifidel-techreview.blogspot.com/2007/02/talking-about-my-ipod-collection.html">iPod collection</a> and all. But there are some things I can't find on iTunes, especially including Chinese music.<br /><br />One spot I've found that lets me download music (and video, photos, etc.) for my Mac is <a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20289">Poisoned</a>. I have downloaded tons of material here -- video clips, songs, and some really cool recordings of old and forgotten material. One of my favorites is <a href="http://www.writingup.com/believin/reading_up_march_reading_list_in_review_0#comment-240288">Andy Griffith doing <i>Hamlet</i></a>. Things like that are hard to find. I've also picked up full recordings of several of Shakespeare's plays, which is a very useful thing to have for class.<br /><br />On the down side, I've had a few recordings that I downloaded there that weren't of very good quality.
