Kindle
My friend loaned me his Kindle Reader for a couple of days back in the Spring. I have to confess myself a convert to the new technology. I am almost sure I will get one the next time I am in the States, having it shipped there so that I can download things easily before making my return to Asia. After having used my friend's for a few days, I am pretty sure I can make it work out for me the way I want, even though I am not going to be within range of the network most of the time. (I still can't believe it isn't available ANYWHERE outside of the US yet. That has to change soon, I would imagine.)
The Kindle is a great toy for any avid reader. And for a reader who travels much, it is like a miracle-toy. I am very much looking forward to getting mine on my next trip home. It is going to be a great way to carry my library with me.

Ugh
I had a terrible summer with my computer. It started acting up almost as soon as I got home, and I finally broke down and took it to the Apple shop. We tried reinstalling software, zeroing all data, and all sorts of tricks to make sure it wasn't a virus... only to figure out (at last) that it was the motherboard. And maybe a few other small hardware related problems. At the end of the day, repairs were going to cost a fair bit, and there was a promotion on the MacBook... so, I'm now using a new laptop.
I haven't given up on the old one, though. I'm going to do the repairs on it myself, saving a ton of money. I'll give it to my friend when it is fixed up, and let her enjoy a pretty big upgrade from what she is using. Should be fun for all. At least, once I get the time to sit down and do it.

One more week....
I heard from a friend that he got a Kindle Reader for his birthday. He's in the States now, and should be back to Shanghai in a week. He's a very nice guy, and I feel pretty sure he'll let me take some time to explore the new toy. I can hardly wait for him to get back! (Of course, not just for the toy...)
If he has a good experience with getting books for the Kindle Reader, I might end up getting one sooner than I thought. I've been reluctant because of the lack of network coverage outside of the US. But if that proves not to be a problem for him while he is located in Shanghai, then I think I'll be very eager to have one too. Maybe even as early as this summer...
Can't wait to see it!

Still Anxiously Waiting
I am eager for Amazon's Kindle Reader to expand its network coverage outside of the US. As soon as it does so, you can be sure that I will purchase the newest Kindle Reader.
The Kindle allows you to carry loads of books without the bulk (and weight). Downloading books would save me a ton on overseas shipping fees too.
I've been watching this technology develop, and am finally 100% sold on it... if they will just make it available to overseas users!
If you are lucky enough to live an area where you are covered, consider picking yours up now. The price you pay on the device will quickly be recouped on the lower prices for e-books, especially if you buy as many books as I do.

Noise-Reduction Headphones
I first became interested in noise-reduction headphones when I got bumped up to Business Class on a trip to the States last year. Everyone in Business Class had them, and I felt a little low-class for being without a pair for myself. Obviously they are just the thing for everybody who's anybody. Well, I guess I'm a nobody, right?
Wrong.
My sister got me a pair of noise-reduction headphones for Christmas, and now I know why everybody in Business Class loves them. In Business Class, you are likely sitting with people who travel a lot, and so know how to make those long trips in as much comfort as possible. Noise-reduction headphones make a difference. They are very effective for blocking out sound, making it possible to sleep on those long flights.
I am so glad my sister got me a pair of noise-reduction headphones. Now, not only am I somebody, but I am also somebody who is able to get a little shut-eye on long trips.
